The hero/menace meter from the first game isn't even here. I never felt this discomfort with Aiden because it's in character for Aiden to do bad things. The hacking gameplay feels designed for Aiden, the guy who doesn't give a fuck. Marcus's main source of income is bank fraud and stealing from cars and pawning what he finds. I eventually stopped weaving around traffic, I would just hack them out of my way. Now you have a character who is this hopeful hacktivist who wants to fight big data, but you're still stealing cars constantly, blowing up steam pipes in the street, causing traffic accidents. I was never uncomfortable playing as Aiden, because he's explicitly a selfish shithead and in gameplay you do selfish shithead things. In fact, I think all the hacking powers you have fit more with Aiden than with marcus.

There's a mission where they deal with someone swatting people to cheat at rainbow six by swatting him, and they moralize about how bad swatting is, even though you can swat any random citizen consequence free as an unlockable power. They don't seem to care who suffers and who dies as long as they reach their goal. They’re always upbeat and having fun, talking about if alien or predator would win in a fight. I think the main problem for me is: the characters and their tone match NOTHING else about the game. Dedsec is supposed to be concerned with their reputation, wouldn't it be a huge image problem if a pile of dead bodies crop up every time they break a story? Even at the beginning, the other Dedsec members are all concerned that the system has flagged marcus as a gun owner, but then you get to headquarters and Wrench is happily showing you the 3d printer, their super happy fun time merchant of death painted with a unicorn farting a rainbow. It's a major problem for the story if marcus is wrongly sentenced to community service and he decides the best response is to start gunning down cops and private security. So why are there guns? I wish they had the guts to not let you carry a gun. Even if you have to actually go in because there's a cutscene, distracting people with their phone is so powerful that you barely ever have to fight. Your wheelbot can steal anything you can, and it can just poof back to you. It actually feels like hacking should, when I'm sending my robots into the area to steal or hack something and cause chaos, guards running around searching for the intruder while I'm just sitting outside in the grass on my laptop. I found the hacking gameplay to be really great with the addition of the wheelbot and drone. the tone stays upbeat and happy even as your fun treehouse club crashes the power grid of south korea as a stepping stone for something else. I think the hacking gameplay is really fun, and the characters did grow on me, but they don't seem to understand that their actions have consequences for the people living around them. I did enjoy some elements of watch dogs 2, but it has such major identity and tone problems that I'm not sure I can recommend it for everyone. Well, people must not have liked the characters there either, so the third game has no characters at all. People don't like that, next game let's have a lighter tone and fun characters. Game one, Aiden is a selfish edgelord who makes everything he touches worse. It does feel like each game is just hamfistedly responding to the reception of the previous game. People sometimes say that it feels like Ubisoft is just designing games by AI, and I really feel it with the watch dogs series.
